pg 116 – The architet and engineers Rice Francis Ritchie (RFR) wanted to create glass walls of optimum transparency to house bamboo plants. The tried and tested approach for a large wall like this was to hang glass sheets like a curtain, using glass fins as beams to strengthen the walls against the wind. But if one looked at these obliquely, one would see the many layers of glass fins rather that the clean line of the wall. So RFR hung the glass sheets, but instead supported them with thin, almost invisible, high-tensile cables in the form of opposing bowstring trusses. This system has now been developed and used through architecture.
