pg 71 – (talking about crystal palace and the grand palais). The vast halls of steel and glass were the first palaces for the consumer, who rules and is ruled by the consumer society. This age of new production methods and systems also gave brith to new construction methods: the introduction of steel as a building material made it possible to erect roof structures with and enormous pan withing a very short time. Besides, glass panes could now be inserted in steel roof-frames, and the resulting transparency gave the vast hall an airy, light atmosphere… The use of steel structures made such wide spans possible and the new possibilities offered by the new construction methods were eagerly exploited, the question rises whether they were truly functional.
